Deir Hawa

Deir Hawa sits perched on the slopes of a mesa in the Jarjara Escarpment. This windswept bluff was once a refuge for religious ascetics, but their isolation came to an abrupt end when one of the curious pilgrims who came to visit them spotted the gleam of silver in the surrounding rocks. Prospectors have long exhausted the richest veins, but the villagers who live here today practice a number of close-guarded techniques to extract the precious metal from the ores that remain.
