Dol Amroth
Dol Amroth stands as a fortress-city upon a high promontory jutting westward into the Bay of Belfalas, commanding Gondor's southern coast with majestic authority. The city occupies the southern end of the small bay called Cobas Haven, where the River Ringló flows into the sea. This peninsula position grants Dol Amroth natural defensive advantages - towering cliffs protect seaward approaches, while massive walls guard the landward sides. The city's elevated position allows watchers on the Sea-ward Tower to scan vast stretches of ocean for approaching ships, whether friendly traders or hostile Corsair raiders. The name commemorates a tragic love story from the distant past. In T.A. 1981, Amroth, the last King of Lórien, came to Edhellond (the Elven haven fifty miles north) seeking passage to Aman with his beloved Nimrodel. She had fled Lórien's darkness after the Balrog awakened in Moria, and Amroth had promised to follow her into the West. But Nimrodel became lost in the White Mountains, never reaching the coast. Amroth waited aboard the last ship from Edhellond, but when a great autumn storm drove the vessel out to sea, he leaped overboard in a desperate attempt to swim ashore and search for her. He drowned in the bay's cold waters, and Nimrodel was never found. The hill where the Princes' stronghold stood was thereafter called Dol Amroth in memory of the lost Elf-king's final moments - a poignant reminder that even immortal beings can fall to grief and the sea's merciless power. The principality itself is known by multiple names. Officially, the fief is called Belfalas, or alternatively Dor-en-Ernil, reflecting its unique status as a hereditary princedom within the kingdom of Gondor. In the Common Speech, the region is sometimes called the Langstrand, though this name more properly belongs to Anfalas to the west.
