Birlinn
The Battanians are less known for their maritime traditions than many other peoples of the north, but some tribes have long plied the rivers and lakes of their forest lands or traded along the coast. The birlinn, or “catship”, evolved out of the smaller flat-bottomed boats used on inland waters. Its low freeboard means that it struggles in rough seas, but in a calm or a swell its stubby hull is perhaps the most maneuverable of any Calradian vessel, adept for darting around rocks, whirlpools or shoals.
