False Money
As you leave the village, a trader comes up to you and says the "silver" denars that some of your men just gave him are just polished iron. You can indeed see some specks of rust. He demands that you pay him in full. It's entirely possible that your men tried to pass off some false coinage, but the trader's "evidence" could equally easily have come from his own stock.
