Infantry
Infantry represent everything from untrained levies to professional legionaries or a chieftain's bodyguard. They form the backbone of most armies. If they get into close combat and are sufficiently numerous and keep their formation, they will usually be able to prevail against other types of troops. Many carry shields, which protect them from both melee and missile weapons. If cavalry can break them up and conduct hit-and-run attacks, however, or if they are attacked from a flank, they may take heavy losses. Many infantry have throwing weapons, allowing them to soften up an enemy before a charge or to fight back against attacking horse archers.
